As in all medieval villages, Berkswell had stocks in the centre. Berkswell’s are still there, surrounded by a circle of stumps.
Quoting a 1973 Reader’s Digest book, Folklore, Myths and Legends of Britain, Wikipedia notes that the stumps were built especially for the punishment of one-legged ex-soldier and his two drinking companions – being as there are are only five leg holes.
